As a writer in the field of small business, I make it a habit to read as many articles by the major influencers in the space as possible (which is one of the best perks of my job). I wanted to share with you some of the more recent quotes I’ve heard.

Here’s some of the most important thoughts in business from the last two weeks:

If you hire brilliant people, you have a far better chance of building a brilliant business.

Obviously Richard Branson has created some of the most innovative businesses in the world. Starting with a record shop, he has built an airline, a mobile company, and a space tourism company. So when he gives advice on building a brilliant business, I’m going to take his word for it. Full article here.

We control our actions (even when it feels like we don’t) and our actions over time (especially when we think no one is looking) earn our reputation.

I’ve seen people spend a lot of time building a solid reputation, then destroying it with one terrible move. This is just like business. I’ve had the opportunity to work in a lot of small businesses, and as a marketer in a tiny company, you get to wear a lot of hats, which allowed me to see a bigger picture. When you’re running your small business, make sure you know at least the basics of every part of your business, so when you make a big decision, you’re taking all those factors into account. The goal of your website should culminate in an action. You want users to do something. Read an article. Sign up for a free trial. Download a resource. Buy a product.

I’m convinced every small business should have a website. Google is the Yellow Pages of today, so if you don’t have a web presence, you won’t be found. When you’re working on your website, make sure you have it clearly in your mind what you want someone visiting your page to do. Pretty websites are nice, but if they don’t bring in revenue for your business in one way or another, it’s not a quality business website. Full article here.
