A lot of the people we interview for Faces of Main Street powered by Lendio, a site dedicated to telling every entrepreneur’s story, give some really great business advice. Here is some insightful advice on becoming a better business owner by loving what you do.

Chase What You Love Doing & Find a Way to Make Money Doing It

love what you do social stance

Business Owners: Josh Smith & Taylor Brown

Business: Social Stance

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Advice: “Chase what you love doing, and find a way to make money doing it.” He has followed this principle in his life and it has lead him to owning two businesses, and being able to do what he loves full time. “I’m not confined to a desk crunching numbers. Sometimes that can be fun for people, but for me I like thinking outside the box.” Creativity is what he loves, so he chased it. The last words he leaves for future business owners, “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.”

Love Your Work and Love Your Customers

love what you do hatch family chocolates

Business Owners: Steve Hatch & Kate Masterson

Business: Hatch Family Chocolates

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Advice:  “My biggest win is when the customer is happy, and when they come back.” Something very apparent is these chocolatiers are not in it for the money, they are in it because it is their true passion. “I don’t think you should go into business just for money, you will lose what’s really important and you’re not going to care about the people you are serving. I think for anyone to be successful, at what they do, they have to have a passion. For me it is really seeing our customers happy, laughing, and enjoying our chocolates. I think it’s what gives you the motivation when things are slow and also remembering it’s your passion and why you are there.”

Let Passion Drive Your Business

love what you do cotopaxi

Business Owner: Davis Smith

Business: Cotopaxi

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Advice: “My goal was to build a movement; a business and a brand that would get people passionate about giving back and helping others. In the outdoor space, no one has ever built a brand around humanity. I would say, we have a responsibility to make the world better. Your business doesn’t have to have a social mission, but make sure you spend time yourself, and encourage your team, to give back. My second piece of advice would be, you can do it. Entrepreneurship is a blast. Each of us has a desire to create inside of us. It takes some guts to do it, but it doesn’t mean go crazy and quit your job tomorrow. Be willing to take some risks and be disciplined about your ideation. You’re going to spend the next five to ten years of your life doing it, so make sure you put in enough time to be sure it’s the right thing.”
