Have you heard about Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses? I visited the website this morning to see what it was all about and liked what I saw. According to the company:

“Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses is a $500 million investment to help small businesses create jobs and economic opportunity by providing them with greater access to business education, financial capital, and business support services.”

If you’ve ever wondered just where the job growth over the last 15 years has come from, “Small businesses have generated 64 percent of new job growth over the past 15 years,” writes the company. “They represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms, hire 40 percent of high tech workers, and produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms.”

I’d call that the backbone of the U.S. economy, wouldn’t you?

Right now the program operates in Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Long Beach, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York and Salt Lake City (where I heard about it). The program has been around since 2009, so if you’ve already heard about it and it happens to be in your city, I hope you’re taking advantage of the educational opportunity. If not, jump in. I think this is potentially a great program that could benefit your company. They are expanding on a city-by-city basis, so if they aren’t where you are yet, it’s possible that they will be there soon.

You can get more information about applying for the program via the Goldman Sachs website.

Fortunately, this isn’t the only resource available for small business owners. In Salt Lake City, for example, Salt Lake Community College offers the Utah Small Business Development Center to help small businesses in our state. They help business owners with business plans, accounting education, marketing and other issues associated with running a small business.

These type of programs exist all over the country—some are offered by private industry like the Goldman Sachs program and others are offered by local community colleges and universities. If you’re aware of these types of programs where you are, we’d love to share them here. What’s more, if you’ve had experience with any of these programs that you’d like to share, we’d love to hear about that too.
