Having played college soccer, I believe athletics and other similar pursuits can really aid those in business. Playing sports instilled in me the importance of hard work, competition, and overcoming challenges. And I’m not the only one.
I recently had the pleasure of discussing my entrepreneurial journey with Thom Singer of the hit podcast, Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do. Thom noted that many of his interview subjects have played sports at the college or professional level, and we had a great discussion about why athletes make great business owners.
If you’re not already listening, I highly recommend it. The podcast is a goldmine of best practices, potential pitfalls, and creative approaches to business ownership; the series has more than 450 episodes now. Thom had long been making a living as a speaker and author when he realized that a podcast could be a great way for him to create valuable content, while also sharing the inventive ways entrepreneurs are making a go of pursuing their dreams.
During my discussion with Thom, we covered everything from my journey founding Lendio, to the importance of giving back. Through the Lendio Gives program, Lendio employees are donating to Kiva, a crowdfunded loan organization that is expanding financial access to underserved communities around the world. Employees are able to donate directly from every paycheck, which is then matched by the company. We’ve lent almost $175,000 so far and helped people across the globe to grow their own businesses.
This podcast was really fun for me, because entrepreneurship is such a part of everything I do. I’ve always loved to solve problems, think creatively, and invent. Thom and I discussed our shared passion for that, and for inspiring others. So much of our business at Lendio is about the people. Whether it’s about supporting our own employees or helping small business owners to pursue their dreams. You can check out the episode here or download it in iTunes.
