Have a great idea for a side gig, but too lazy to actually go through with it? Don’t worry, you’re not alone, a lot of people are in the same boat as you. But whether it’s just because of laziness or a fear of failure, always remember that it’s better to have played and lost then to not play at all. Here are 5 inspirational quotes, which should hopefully get you off your couch and into the drivers seat of your own little startup.

“The critical ingredient is getting off your butt and doing something. It’s as simple as that. A lot of people have ideas, but there are few who decide to do something about them now. Not tomorrow. Not next week. But today. The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer.”

       –Nolan Bushnell, Entrepreneur

Here’s the most important step to becoming an entrepreneur; doing something about it. A lot of people will have many different ideas but until you start to work on them you haven’t taken a step towards owning your own side gig. The first step actually is to get up and do something about it and turn your idea into a real life business. The best way to do this is create an actionable plan with a ton of tiny steps, then knocking them down one at a time.

There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.

      -Colin Powell

Prepare by doing research, find out who your target audience is, figure out costs, find out what regulations you’ll be dealing with. Then, start cranking. Work hard, work smart and work fast. When you fail, remember that failure should be seen as a teacher from whom you learn how to deal with obstacles in the future.

“Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.”

–Mary Kay Ash, Mary Kay Cosmetics Founder

It’s really easy to start doubting yourself before you even start your business. Don’t. A lot of businesses were started by people with less experience and knowledge as you. Make sure your business plan is feasible, and if it is, believe that you can do it. While being a realist is important in business, negativity can crush your dreams before you even begin.

“Remember to celebrate milestones as you prepare for the road ahead.”

      –Nelson Mandela, South African Leader

Great advice by a great leader and one you should implement as well. Each milestone and success should be looked upon as an achievement, something worthy of celebration. These milestones should be seen as steppingstones towards your ultimate goal of owning a successful side business and should serve as inspirations for future milestones. Celebrate the little victories, and let them propel you toward bigger ones.

“I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not trying.”

–Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO

Go through with your idea, give it your all, because you don’t know what will happen until you actually try. The only guaranteed outcome for not trying is your idea not happening. Research your idea, find a way to execute it responsibly, and give it a go. As the above quote says, failure is the greatest teacher, and who knows, your idea could become that side gig you’ve been dreaming about.

These are just some of my favorite quotes in regards to starting your own side business. Hopefully they will give you the push you need to turn your dreams into reality.
